Who? Students entering 6th to 12th grade in school year 2017 - 2018.

Why? IDEA MATH provides in-depth enrichment in important mathematical areas, particularly in the fields from which contests problems are drawn: algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory. We believe students learn best by discovering, rather than simply memorizing, essential theorems and techniques. Our process puts students at the center of the classes, as students work together to develop their ideas. Our instructors lead this process by teaching vital ideas, giving meaningful examples, and guiding students through the problem-solving process.

How? We apply seminar-style teaching in our classes. Class sizes are small to ensure that students receive plenty of individual attention. Students are expected to work as a group and present their solutions and ideas to the class.

What are some unique strengths of IDEAMATH that distinguishes it from other(summer/winter/online/ weekend) math programs?

The first and one of the most critical and unique assets that IDEAMATH has is its curriculum and teaching materials. IDEAMATH's print-outs, practice tests, and other teaching materials are inspired by a compilation of over a decade of training materials of Phillips Exeter Academy math team, one of the nation's strongest. Not only does the material cover a wide breadth of topics, it is also structured in a clean and thoughtful way, optimized by years of teaching and training. From the basic topics, such as introductory algebra, counting, and geometry, to complex and deeper materials at the Olympiad level and beyond, IDEAMATH's unique teaching material provides the firm groundwork for instructors to design a more effective and structured curriculum.

The second and equally unique asset is IDEAMATH's strong team of experienced teachers. IDEAMATH's instructors consist of front-line teachers, math team coaches, and former students of the program, all of whom have taught middle school and high school students for several years. As a testament to the flexibility and strength of our teaching, IDEAMATH does not have an entrance exam: we are confident that we can find an appropriate place in our extensive curriculum to fit any student, regardless of his/her background. Our teaching staff is attentive of each student's unique learning style, and will work to tailor each class depending on his or her specific needs. Finally, the third unique asset of IDEAMATH is its emphasis on culture and behavior. While learning mathematics is the primary focus of the program, it certainly is not its only goal. Instead, the program pays special effort to cultivate in each student an attitude conducive to learning. It is our philosophy that in the long run, cultivating a good mindset far outweighs the benefit of learning a specific material. Simply put, when a student learns a mathematical knowledge, it will serve him/her throughout his/her school years. When a student learns how to be a good learner, it will serve the student for the rest of his/her life.

Concretely, IDEAMATH instructors guide students not to brag about their achievements and rush ahead, but rather to develop patience and maturity. Students are expected to, at the guidance of the instructors, become teachers themselves by helping their peers. This way, not only does the student develop a deeper understanding of the material, he/she also gains leadership and maturity that will enrich his/her learning experience.

Courses Offered

Our weekend program offers courses covering materials from our four series (P-series, U-series, R-series, and M-series). Based on what we have seen in past years, we offer most (if not all) of the following courses:

PC1, PC2, PCX, UC1, UC2, UC3, RCT, RCV, MOR

Each course is designed for 60 hours of class time and runs for 2 full sequential sessions, where each session is comprised of 10 class and each class lasts 3 hours. All classes meet on Saturdays (see schedule) during the school year. We have tried our best to avoid SAT test dates, major competition (HMNT, EMCC, MATHCOUNTS chapter/state, EMCC, etc.) dates and school vacations.

Two of the major strengths of our program -- a strong academic team and a full range of materials -- allow us to create new courses (such as PC1.5, UCX) to meet the needs of the student body.

Registration is only the first step of towards enrollment. Enrollment (for each session) is completed only after the tuition is paid in full.

Note that

* Testing fee is non-refundable. Additional late fees may apply to late (additional) placement tests. Returning students taking recommended courses do not need to take the placement test.

** Note that the tuition payment is independent to student's course placement because the tuition is for the program, not for a specific course. IDEA MATH staff work with students on course placement by reviewing their academic backgrounds, assigning placement test levels, reviewing placement test work, and more. IDEA MATH staff make the final decision on students' course placements. (Please see our Course Placement Policy section for details.) All tuition refund for withdrawing will be processed based on the refund policy.

***The tuition payment is due on this date. Enrollment after this date will depend on space availability and a late fee ($50 or more) will be applied to the tuition.

Registration Procedure

Create an account -- if you are new to our program, please pressthis to create an account.

It is important for the new applicant to answer all questions accurately and provide detailed information. In particular, age, high school graduation year, detailed math background -- courses taken, official contests taken and official scores (rather than ranks)

Register for placement test:

After creating the account or (for returning students) logging into your account, update your information (if needed) and register to weekend program. Returning students have a course placement recommendation from previous instructor, however, the returning students are also able to choose to take placement test (testing fee applies). It is important for the returning students to update your personal information each time you register to our program.

Course Placement and Placement Test Policies

Important notes for course availability/selection and placement:

The above lists consist of projected courses we offer in this program. Two of the major strength of our program -- a strong academic team and a full range of materials -- allow us to provide proper new courses/groups to meet the needs of the student body. Please note that, though unlikely, the course offering is subject to change based on actual enrollment and staff availability.

We review enrolled students' background and work with them on placement and/or projected placement levels. The purpose of this process is to group students with similar backgrounds together, and our teachers will find proper materials to work with each group/section.

There are 5 placement test levels.

Test T1 (mainly for PC1/Contest Math 1 and PC2/Contest Math 2 courses);
Test T2 (mainly for PCX/Contest Math 3 and UC1/Contest Math 4 courses);
Test T3 (mainly for UC2 and UC3 courses);
Test T4 (mainly for R-series courses);
Test T5 (mainly for M-series courses)

Our placement test problems are selected from our core curriculum. For example, test T2 problems are mainly chosen from our PC2 and PCX materials, and some from UC1 materials. Based on students work, we can see which of PCX or UC1 is a proper place for the student. If the student's score is abnormal, then we will look at the student's background further and consider options such as PC1, PC2, UC2, etc.

Incoming students: joining the program in the beginning of session 1/fall session

Returning IDEA Math student with course placement recommendation will be placed into the course based on the recommendation unless the student request a placement test. (Course placement info for a returning student can be accessed from the student's account. )

Other students will be placed into proper courses by their academic background and placement test work. If you are not certain about the exact course you should take, make sure that the detailed academic background information (age, grade level, math courses taken, and official contest scores -- if any, etc.) is updated in your account and register for a course that is relatively fit your background and needs. After you are enrolled (admitted and tuition paid in full), our academic team will work with you to find the most proper course placement or placement test. In the later case, you are required to take a mandatory placement test.

Incoming students: joining the program in the beginning of session 2

A student seeking to join IDEA Math in the middle of an academic year program without having been enrolled the previous session should create an account (returning student should use his original account), submit up to date information about his/her mathematical background, and then contact the IDEA Math staff at info@ideamath.org. Applicant is required to take a placement test (the test fee is $50 or more).

Placement test (for session 1/fall session) schedule and fee

The placement test is scheduled on Saturday, 9/9/2017, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM at Lexington high school. The test fee is $30 if registered online by 9/4/2017, $50 after 9/4/2017.

Course placement decisions

IDEA MATH staff makes the final course placement decisions.

It is important to understand that we put a thorough effort in our pre-program placement process to ensure students are in the most proper courses in our program so they can gain the most from our program. By past experience, there are limited moves in the between the courses during the program.

During the entirety of our program, our instructors are continuously and closely reviewing students' work and will contact the students and parents if a student is encountering difficulties in the program (particularly with regards to their mathematics, study skills, or general attitude). Based on our knowledge of the students' work, it may be in the best interests of a student to realign his class assignment, whether during a session or between sessions. Consequently, instructors will make recommendations to the students and parents if necessary to ensure that each student is in the most appropriate class for him. In addition, if during any session of our program a student wishes to move between courses, the student should first contact the IDEA Math staff either in person or via email at info@ideamath.org; we will discuss the move with the instructors immediately.

If we agree that a move to a lower course is appropriate, we will act immediately.

If a student has consistently turned in outstanding mathematical work and shown great leadership in class, our instructors will discuss with the student the possibility of moving him or her to a higher course. If the student is willing to give a try, the student will go through the following process to ensure a smooth transition: obtain a few sets of additional materials from us, complete and submit the work on those materials to us. Only after a careful review of the students' work will we make a decision about the most appropriate place for the student.
